Previously, you could back up your virtual machines with Veeam Backup & Replication running on either VMware ESXi or Hyper-V (support for Nutanix Acropolis coming soon).

Today, many organizations still rely on physical servers and workstations that can’t be virtualized – sometimes due to compliance requirements, sometimes resource usage is very high and can’t be balanced in a virtual environment.

So, what if you want to follow the 3-2-1 rule and have a cloud-based offsite copy of your physical workloads or workloads reside in your own cloud environment?

This is where Veeam new agents come in and solve the problems for you.

What types of agents are available?

There are three agents: Veeam Agent for Windows, Veeam Agent for Linux, and Veeam Agent for Office 365.

Veeam agents for Windows and Linux can be connected to your cloud repository on the agent level.

Veeam agent for Microsoft Office 365 allows you to back up your Office 365 email data back to your local environment.

What are the benefits of agent backups?

Simple! With agents, you can backup physical machines and any type of VM on any type of hypervisor – including those running in the public cloud (think Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS). Also, with agent backups, you can have more than one restore option, allowing you to restore at different levels – be it an individual file or an entire physical machine.

To what degree will my physical machines be protected with agent backups? And how does that compare to my previously protected virtual machines?

Your physical machines will be fully protected and backed up in our offsite cloud just as your virtual machines were before this release, whether on a corporate network, offsite in your home, or in another environment.

What happened to Veeam Endpoint Backup?

Previously, there was only one way to accomplish a physical backup of a desktop, laptop or physical server with Veeam: you’d use Veeam Endpoint Backup to back up your physical PC/server to your local repository and then backup the data from that local repository to our offsite cloud. Now, Veeam Agents directly facilitate the entire process by connecting directly to our offsite cloud.

What capabilities are offered by Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows?

Enterprise-level backup and recovery: Get complete protection for both workstations and physical servers, including full application awareness.

Cloud-based backup and recovery: Back up directly to a Veeam Cloud Connect repository.

Protection of roaming endpoints: Meet RPOs for laptops and tablets outside the corporate network.

What capabilities are offered by Veeam Agent for Linux?

Backup anywhere: Protect an entire computer or create volume-level and file-level backups of Linux instances running in the cloud or on-premises.

Flexible recovery: Perform on-premises restores from backups of individual cloud instances, or cloud restores of on-premises backups.

Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication™: Take full advantage of Veeam backup repositories as target locations, leverage existing capabilities for granular recovery — and more!
