The following is a real-life example of a New York City based fashion company during the aftermath of a real-life disaster, Superstorm Sandy:

“After the storm hit, the streets were completely flooded 2 blocks away, the first floor offices were flooded out, and power only existed on select floors (resulting in the company even considering running extension cords outside the building between floors). There was no Internet, and – more importantly – no communications. With all operations, applications, and services – to both their staff and customers – residing in this building, the company was facing a true crisis.”

And while most companies hope to never find themselves in such dire straights, it’s an all-too-common scenario. What if it’s not just your data that needs restore, but your entire working environment? Backup doesn’t always guarantee you to be up and running again quickly. That’s where disaster recovery comes in. The increasing usage of virtualization has made disaster recovery faster, easier and cheaper.

So, why don’t more companies embrace Disaster Recovery as a Service?

Because it’s confusing, that’s why! We find that a lot of companies fall into one of two categories:

  1. They have no disaster recovery services at the moment because they are still trying to figure all this “aaS” (as a Service) stuff out, or
  2. They do have some kind of recovery-related “aaS” in place, but they’re not sure if it’s the right one.

In either case, you’re probably feeling the pressure to get this right. Recovering your data from a disaster is stressful enough; you don’t want the added stress of making a recovery misstep that turns into an “update your resume because you’ll need a new job” event.

But, which “aaS” do you need – Backup? Disaster Recovery? Platform? Infrastructure? And what does “aaS” mean?

And, unfortunately, the list above actually could continue beyond just those listed. With so many vendors vying for your attention, selling their service as the answer to your problems, competition is fierce. But rather than trying to all agree on one term to use, each vendor calls it something different to differentiate themselves – and creating more confusion in the process.

Eliminating the Confusion

To eliminate the confusion, you obviously need to be informed – both as to what specific recovery services are being offered and, more importantly, what your real recovery needs are. You need to first start with business objectives and work backwards to recovery.

What kind of impact will the organization feel when each goes down or is unavailable? When it comes to the various operational aspects of the business, what kind of failover does each require? Is it 2-minutes? 4-hours? A day? Think about a “disaster” scenario with a complete loss of operations, and begin to work through each service, application, system, and dataset used within the business. Craft the response in tangible terms to the business – financial, productivity, reputation, etc.

Now that you know what’s important to your business, you need to know is what the right service or services that will meet your business’ recovery objectives in its time of need.
