A lot is being written on the topic called, “Internet of Things” (IoT), including a recent forecast by Gartner that it is driving a product and services industry which will be worth about $300 billion by 2020. That estimate includes a prediction that there will be $26 billion installed and interconnected devices by that time.

The ironic thing is that only a staggering 33% of our planet’s inhabitants actually use the Internet.

“We’re talking not only about mobile phones, tablets, laptops and wearables, but specialized sensors on people, clothing, cars, animals, houses, weather stations, videocams, drone flying machines–you name it,” according to an article at eWEEK. “We can’t even imagine some of the connected devices we’ll be using six or seven years from now.”

In its report, “The Impact of the Internet of Things on Data Centers,” Gartner points out the following as the biggest potential challenges for IT leaders and data center managers:

  1. Security–The continued increase of digitization and automation of devices will create new security challenges for organizations in many industries.
  2. Enterprise–Increased security issues will impact availability requirements, which will also increase, and the two will put real-time business processes at risk.
  3. Privacy–With so much information on so many devices, the potential for data breaches increases dramatically.
  4. Data–There will be a two-prong impact of data on storage infrastructure: personal data driven by consumers and big data driven by corporations.
  5. Storage–As more and more data is created, organizations will have to increase storage capacity. The challenge is how to scale storage effectively and cost efficiently.
  6. Server IT–The impact on the server market will be largely on increased investment in key vertical industries and organizations related to those industries.
  7. Networking–The IoT will require the transfer of vast amounts of small message sensor data to the data center for processing, which will dramatically increase inbound data center bandwidth requirements.
